Quality and Color of Natural Emerald Jewelry.
QUALITY
The finest quality loose emerald and emerald jewelry has the color of fresh young green grass, an almost pure spectral green, possibly with a very faint tint of blue, as in the "drop of oil" emerald from Colombia, which enjoys the reputation of supplying the finest in Emeralds (excellent quality gemstones are also produced in Brazil and Zambia.)
Its fine intense green coloring is due to a trace of chromium or vanadium replacing the aluminum in the beryl structure.
Because of the nature of this replacement, almost no Emeralds with intense color are free from this network of included crystals trapped within, known as the "jardin," as the French call it, because under magnification you will see all sorts of lovely patterns resembling foliage in a garden.
Emeralds are considered a "Type III" gemstone by GIA which means that they are virtually always included to one degree or another. Clarity is important, but inclusions are tolerated more in this variety than virtually any other gem. For this reason, color saturation and hue are a bigger factor in determining the value of an Emerald.
Flawless specimens of good color and size are exceedingly rare and command higher prices than diamonds of equal weight.
