THE SANCY DIAMOND
SANCY
The Sancy diamond is a pale yellow 55,23ct shield-shaped stone.
Its first owner was probably Carlos II, the Duke of Burgundy. It was stolen on the battle of 1477 and probably had many owners until get to the hands of Nicola of Harlay, Seigneur de Sancy, French ambassador sent to prison by Turkish court.
In 1649, the stone was owned by Luiz XIV, king of France and became part of French crown. The Sancy disappeared during the French revolution. It was known by some that Jose Bonaparte had seen the stone in the treasury of Carlos IV, of Spain.
The last proprietor was Visconde Astor (England) who bought it in 1966.
In 1978, the Astor family sold the Diamond, returning it to France again. The Sancy is now housed in the Louvre.
